Keyboard key drop test for Mac held-key consistency

Hold Space or an arrow key and observe its repeat rhythm. The test learns the usual interval, then flags longer gaps for closer inspection.

A gap must exceed this multiple and be at least 40 ms above the baseline.

Observations

No observations yet. Start testing to see events here.

The initial macOS repeat delay is excluded. After five repeat intervals, gaps are compared with a moving median. If letters open an accent menu, use Space or an arrow key. Scheduling, CPU load and macOS settings can cause gaps; this cannot confirm a physical key dropout. Charts and statistics retain the latest 300 samples.

How to check Mac keyboard held-key consistency

Focus the test area and hold Space or an arrow key. The initial operating-system repeat delay is excluded. After at least five repeat intervals, the tool compares later gaps with a recent median baseline. Release the key between attempts.

02

What a long keyboard autorepeat gap means

The threshold controls how much longer than the baseline a gap must be to be flagged. CPU load, browser scheduling, macOS repeat settings and connection behavior can all change event timing. A long gap is an observation, not confirmation of a physical dropout.

03

When a Mac key does not produce autorepeat

Start with Space or an arrow key. macOS may show an accent menu for some letters, and accessibility settings may change repeat behavior. Compare a key that repeats in a text editor and review Keyboard settings. A quiet event stream does not establish a broken switch.

Can this automatically identify every dropped physical keypress?+

No. It observes gaps between browser autorepeat events while a key is held. The page cannot see a physical press that never generates an event or separate hardware interruptions from software scheduling.

What should I do when a long gap is flagged?+

Repeat the test with the page focused and a stable workload. Compare another application and, for external keyboards, another supported connection. Treat a persistent pattern as a troubleshooting clue.
